Every bride and groom wants their wedding day to be perfect. Connecticut's
Quiet Corner offers every possible setting and amenity to make your special
day the most memorable of your life. Whether you dream of a romantic candlelit
ceremony or want to exchange your vows in a sun-dappled maple grove, it's
possible in the Quiet Corner. Horse drawn carriages, Victorian mansions
and historic inns provide the idyllic setting for the couple seeking traditional
splendor, while country barns, cornfields and wildflowers add rustic flavor
to a country wedding. Sculptured gardens, rolling hills and charming gazebos
provide picturesque photography backdrops. Here, too, you'll find everything
you need to fulfill your wedding day fantasy - sumptuous gowns and stylish
tuxedos, customized floral arrangements, delectable cuisine to suit parties
of all sizes and tastes, and every other service designed to help personalize
your wedding day. The Quiet Corner is a great central meeting place, whether
you're traveling from Massachusetts, Rhode Island or New York.

The gardens surrounding the 1801 Academy Building offer a glorious setting
for an intimate garden wedding and/or wedding photography location. Featured
in national magazines, such as Fine Gardening, Judith's gardens are lush
with roses, allees, arbors and garden rooms outlined with old garden roses.
Appropriate for small catered wedding parties, custom wedding planning
and photography services can be arranged. A Justice of the Peace is also
available on premises.
Season: mid-May through mid-October. Fee: varies with rental, wedding

With an outstanding view of the rolling countryside, this 250-acre farm
is a lovely country setting for indoor or outdoor weddings. An antique
mill site frames the background as bride and groom arrive in a horse-drawn
carriage. Seating for 500 can be accommodated in the lodge; the outdoor
pavilion seats 350. Wrights Mill Farm also offers wedding planning services,
including catering and flowers.

LORD THOMPSON MANOR

It's hard to decide what is more impressive - the 30-room manor itself
or the carpet of emerald lawn surrounding this stately building. Built
in 1917, the manor exudes New England charm and features parquet floors,
wrought-iron balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows and multiple chimneys.
For years the manor served as a summer estate. Easily accessible from
Interstate 395, yet set in a small New England village, the manor retains
its elegant and gracious character. The "Weekend Wedding", a specialty
of the Manor, spans Friday through Sunday, with rehearsal dinner, ceremony,
an after-party and concludes with Sunday brunch. The owners can attest
to the perfection of the setting since they held their own New Year's
Eve wedding at the Manor. A luxurious setting for weddings large and small.
Horse-drawn carriage is also available.

Imagine exchanging your vows on the historic family homestead of Connecticut's
official State Hero, Nathan Hale. Rich in rustic, Revolutionary-era atmosphere,
the 1776 Colonial farmhouse, now a museum, is surrounded by fields and
farm roads and hundreds of acres of the Nathan Hale State Forest. A popular
place to exchange vows is The Holy Grove, a sugar maple plantation planted
in 1812, once the site of prayer meetings. Other wedding locations include
a field of wildflowers and the gardens beside the cornfield. Only outdoor
ceremonies. No receptions. No indoor facilities available.
Season: weather permitting, hours by arrangement. Fee: membership
in the Antiquarian & Landmarks Society.

Once the summer getaway of wealthy merchant, Henry Bowen, this 1846 Gothic
Revival estate in the picturesque town of Woodstock, includes sculptured
boxwood parterre gardens. The porch of the gaily painted main house, now
a museum, makes an intriguing frame for wedding photographs. The carriage
house and grounds can be rented for weddings and receptions; a kitchen
and handicap-accessible restrooms are available. A party of 80 to 100
can be accommodated in the carriage house, or up to 300 with a tent placed
on the grounds. Museum tours can be arranged for guests. Referrals to
local florists, caterers and other wedding services are also offered.
Season: May through mid-October. Fees: $100 per hour.

A lovely site for small or large weddings, receptions are held either
on the grounds surrounding the seven acres of vineyards or in the European-style
wine garden. Views from the vineyard overlook three New England states
-Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

WHIPPLE'S CHAPEL

This unique stone chapel, tucked away by the Five Mile River, has been
the site of over 800 wedding ceremonies and is idyllic for a very intimate
wedding, since it measures a mere 8 feet by 9 feet inside. Adding to its
unique appeal is the fact that the chapel was built from granite brought
from all over the world. Ceremonies are officiated by Mervin Whipple,
a Justice of the Peace, who also holds the distinction of being known
as "Mr. Christmas," because each winter he transforms the grounds into
a Christmas Wonderland, resplendent with thousands of lights and hundreds
of animated figures.

WHITE HORSE INN AT VERNON STILES

A quintessential New England tavern built in 1814, the inn sits on the
town green in a pristine village of stately homes and tall-spired churches.
Boasting outstanding cuisine, fine wines, sumptuous interiors and personal
attention, the inn is handsomely renovated, with luxurious intimate dining
rooms and a spacious, sunlit room for large parties. The inn was a popular
wedding site in the 1800s. Between 1842 and 1847, because of Connecticut's
less stringent marriage requirements, 650 couples, mostly from Rhode Island
and Massachusetts, were married here.
